Top 6 SEO Best Practices to Improve Your Organic Rankings

Originally published May 2023 — updated September 2026.

I often get this question from clients: “How can I improve my SEO?” My response typically emphasizes that it’s a substantial and ongoing endeavor rather than a simple task. So, here’s my comprehensive list of steps to help you get an understanding of the project scope and ultimately improve your website’s search engine optimization (SEO):

Keyword Research:

  • Identify relevant keywords and phrases related to your website’s content and target audience. Keyword Research

On-Page SEO

  • Title Tags: Ensure each page has a unique and descriptive title tag including the targeted keyword.
  • Meta Descriptions: Write compelling and concise meta descriptions that accurately summarize the page’s content.
  • URL Structure: Create SEO-friendly URLs that are concise, descriptive, and include targeted keywords.
  • Header Tags: Use appropriate header tags (H1, H2, etc.) to structure your content and incorporate keywords.
  • Keyword Placement: Include targeted keywords naturally in your content, including the first paragraph.
  • Internal Linking: Link relevant pages within your website to improve navigation and establish keyword connections.
  • Image Optimization: Optimize image filenames, alt tags, and captions using relevant keywords.
  • Page Speed: Ensure fast loading times by optimizing images, using caching techniques, and minimizing code — Google’s Core Web Vitals (loading, interactivity, and visual stability) are the standard metrics here.
  • Mobile Optimization: Create a responsive design that provides an excellent user experience on mobile devices.

High-Quality Content

  • Create unique and valuable content that addresses the needs and interests of your target audience — Google’s E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) rewards content written by real practitioners, not just optimized for keywords.
  • Regularly update your website with fresh content to keep visitors engaged and encourage search engine crawlers.
  • Use headings, bullet points, and relevant media to enhance readability and user experience.

Off-Page SEO

  • Backlinks: Develop a strategy to earn high-quality backlinks from reputable and relevant websites.
  • Social Media Presence: Engage with your audience on social media platforms and share your content.
  • Online Directories: Submit your website to relevant online directories and ensure consistent business information.
  • Google Business Profile: Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile — essential for showing up in local map results if you’re a business competing for nearby customers.

Technical SEO

  • XML Sitemap: Create and submit an XML sitemap to search engines to help them crawl and index your website.
  • Robots.txt: Optimize your robots.txt file to control search engine crawling and indexing.
  • Website Architecture: Keep your website structure clear and logical for both users and search engines.
  • Site Speed and Performance: Optimize your website’s speed, minimize redirects, and fix broken links.
  • Mobile-Friendliness: Ensure your website is mobile-friendly and provides a seamless experience on all devices.
  • Schema Markup: Implement structured data markup to help search engines understand your content better.

Monitoring and Analytics

  • Install and configure analytics tools (such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console) to track your website’s performance and user behavior.
  • Monitor keyword rankings, organic traffic, and user engagement to identify areas for improvement.
